Reminder: Carbs aren’t Scary!

One of the most common concerns with most clients starting G-plans is the amount of carbohydrates. We wanted to take the time to address those concerns today. With many diets out there and long-time bashing of carbohydrates, we’re here to remind you carbs are nothing to be scared of!

Brain Fuel

Our brains literally runs on carbohydrates! Depriving our brains of the food it needs reduces its function. It is important to feed your brain the proper nutrients so it can carry out normal, day-to-day functions, like thought and telling your lungs to breathing. Severely reducing our normal intake of carbohydrates may create brain fog, general reduction in energy, and actually increase our cravings for high sugary foods. It’s okay to reduce the intake of “bad” carbohydrates, like candies and sodas, but don’t restrict yourself from eating the ones that feed our brain!

Not All Carbs are Created Equal

Some may argue this, but not all carbohydrates are created equal. Yes, our body digests all carbohydrates down to sugar, and uses that sugar for energy. In that sense, carbs are carbs and our body sees no difference. However, nutrient-dense carbohydrates offer certain things that a piece of candy will not. Many fruits contain enriching nutrients like vitamin C, beneficial minerals like magnesium and potassium, and antioxidant properties that reduce inflammation in the body. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which are all carbohydrates, are also often excellent sources of dietary fiber to help balance blood glucose and regulate digestion. Candy offers sugar for the brain, but nothing else. In this sense, all carbs are not created equal because some can offer so much more for our bodies!

Don’t Let the Past Hold You Back

Don’t get wrapped up in what one diet says versus another. Do what feels right for your body! If you find restricting your carbohydrates goes against the grain so to speak, then don’t do it. What works for one person, may not work for you, and at the end of the day it’s about incorporating moderation as you see fit. Eating deep fried carbs everyday can lead to a bit of trouble, but so can eating an excess of anything! Finding variety, wholesome carbohydrates like fruits, veggies and whole grains are excellent ways to get that fix without going for the french fries every time. Allow yourself the freedom to enjoy the foods that are needed to nourish our bodies – don’t fall into the trap of extreme fad diets making extreme promise paired with unrealistic restrictions!

Restricting carbohydrates on an everyday basis is a common fad-diet mechanism, but very rarely offers permanent results. Instead, find ways to incorporate carbohydrates in a balanced way. Establishing healthy lifestyle habits is the way to create a system that lasts you for a long, quality lifetime!
