Long work days can be the source of some real misery. It can be hard to motivate yourself to keep chugging along when you can barely keep your eyes open. Wondering how people survive these long nine-to-fives? Try adding some of these routines to your day to prevent the midday slump!

Bring Snacks!

Not eating enough food throughout the day leads to a general feeling of sleepiness. This might be especially true if you’re only eating three large meals a day. Start bringing energizing snacks to keep those eyes perky and moral high! Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are all great snacks that travel well and are easy to eat at the desk. Having a small snack full of nutrients helps keep energy up between meals and also help keep the slump at bay.

Tea Time

Sometimes a small amount of caffeine midday is a good way to recharge without risking sleep. Green tea is a great way to get a good source of antioxidants that help the body run smoother that also has a small amount of caffeine in it. Take a second to make yourself a cup and just relax. You work hard all day – allow yourself to give that engine a minute to rest and recharge!

Take a Stroll

Yep, just walk around for a bit! We’re not saying you have to use your lunch to take a walk, but we are suggesting maybe a short five minute stroll around the building. Get up, get the blood flowing a little. Sitting in the same place all day can cause fatigue simply because it’s boring! Working intensely for long periods of time can also cause exhaustion. Take a break to reset your mind!

Water, Water, Water

Dehydration can actually cause a bit of sleepiness, so make sure you’re drinking your water. We might sound like a broken record about water, but it’s true! Stay hydrated to stay awake. Drinking adequate amounts of water throughout the entire day prevents headaches, reduces tiredness, and may also help you to get up to run to the bathroom a few more times. So really, we’re killing two birds with this one – walking and drinking water!

Breaking up a long work day with these small routines help check in with yourself and see how you’re feeling. Taking care of yourself is as important as working hard at your job, and working when you’re burnt out doesn’t get anything done. Take steps towards avoiding the dreaded midday slump with these tips!
