Onions
Yes, we know onions are probably one of the cheapest vegetables at the store. Most people don’t think of planting onions because they are so readily available, and extremely affordable. But trust us, planting onions in your garden could be a lifesaver! Onions deter pests that grow on flowering plants, like tomatoes. The naturally pungent order keeps the bugs at bay, so it’s always a good idea to have an onion plant or two in any garden. Like tomatoes, onions are easy to grow, extremely hardy plants, and can grow in a variety of climates. Onions also are a good source of dietary fiber, which is great to maintain a healthy digestive system, and they also make a great addition to spice up any meal!
Lettuce
Lettuce like onions are not an expensive food to buy, but unlike onions their shelf life is fairly short. Buying a whole head of lettuce is affordable, but who really eats a whole head of lettuce before it goes bad? The best part about planting lettuce in your garden is you always have fresh access to tons of lettuce, and you don’t have to worry about the whole head going bad before you use it! Just pick off one leaf at a time, and you have yourself the most fresh salad in town. This leafy plant isn’t as jammed packed with nutrients as our previous produce friends, but it is a great way to eat your water! Lettuce leaves are naturally high water-containing plants, and eating more lettuce means you’re actually staying hydrated!
Herbs
There are SO many herbs to choose from to plant in your garden this year, which is why we made this category so general. Pick an herb to plant that you like to cook with often. Basil, thyme, mint, and rosemary are all easy-to-grow and maintainable herbs that fit nicely into any garden. Herbs are usually pretty costly at the store, and their shelf life is extremely short. Growing your own herbs is a great way to have fresh meal boosters right at your fingertips, literally! Added bonus: if you can’t use up all your herbs by the end of the season, freeze or dry out the herbs and use them as spice later when we enter the colder months!
